Periodontics

Periodontitis is the fancy term for gum disease, a serious oral issue that can lead to tooth loss. Gingivitis is the first stage of advancing gum disease that not only degrades gum tissue but can also cause severe damage to the teeth and mouth structures when left untreated. At Our Smile Dr., Dr. Cutler is constantly alert for periodontitis and meticulously monitors your mouth for early signs of gum disease. Identifying it early allows us to provide early treatment to stave off the more serious issues. If you are experiencing gum disease, it is important that you receive the necessary treatment quickly. Contact us today at 208-375-4544 to set up your appointment.

Gum disease is a degenerative condition primarily caused by bacteria found in plaque. The bacteria inflame and infect the gum tissues, and when left alone, it can eventually cause the gums to pull away from the teeth. Untreated periodontal disease can result in bone loss, tooth loss, and gum tissue recession.

Following an exam at our office, Dr. Cutler and team will be able to determine whether you suffer from periodontal disease. Until that time, if your gums bleed frequently or are swollen and red, you may be seeing the warning signs of gum disease. Other common symptoms include:

  • Loose teeth
  • Painful chewing
  • Persistent halitosis (bad breath)
  • Receding gum line that make your teeth appear longer than normal.

The treatment for gum disease is based upon your specific dental needs. Depending on the severity of the condition, Dr. Cutler may recommend additional professional dental cleanings, improved at-home oral hygiene, antibiotic treatment, scaling and root planing (deep cleanings), or gum surgery. We strive to help you restore your oral health and halt the progress of the disease.
