The sleep disorder called “apnea” is identified by interruptions in breathing during the night that interfere with a normal sleep cycle. This can be caused by blockages of the airway by the tongue and collapsed tissues in the throat. Left alone, sleep apnea can inflame other critical health concerns, including heart disease, high blood pressure, among others.

Signs and Symptoms

Sleep apnea is a common problem that affects up to 10% of the reported population. Common signs of sleep apnea include:

  • Lack of energy
  • Drowsiness during the day
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Snoring
  • Dry mouth
  • Sore throat
  • Headaches in the morning

The treatment you may receive for sleep apnea will depend on the seriousness of your particular condition.

Many times an oral appliance can alleviate the problem if you suffer from mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. The nightguard works by fitting over your teeth, preventing the tongue from blocking the air passage and holding your jaw in a position that keeps your airway open while you sleep.

If an oral appliance is not the best option for you, we may recommend a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine, or CPAP. This is a common and highly effective solution for sleep apnea.
